About Placitas

Placitas is located in Sandoval County, New Mexico, USA - northeast of Albuquerque and south of Santa Fe. It is positioned 35.32 degrees north of the equator and 106.46 degrees west of the prime meridian. It is neither city nor town - not even so much a village as a series of small communities nestled in the foothills of the magestic Sandia Mountains. From Placitas you can drive a dirt road through Las Huertas Canyon up the less-traveled northern slopes of the Sandia Mountains. Las Huertas is Spanish for "the gardens". The creek is entirely spring- fed and along it you'll find box elder, willows and various evergreens. Placitas has a long and colorful history. Read more here. The population is about 5,500 - plus the many dogs, cats, horses, goats, chickens, llamas, horses (wild and domestic), bears and other creatures that populate this animal-friendly community.

There are three historic acequias: Las Huertas/La Jara, Las Placitas, and Rosa de la Castilla - all spring fed - with small farms, gardens and orchards along them. Parts of Placitas are considered a "right to farm" district. Read more here.

There are wild horses whose ancestors date back to the 1600s. Protecting them and the heritage they represent is a passion in Placitas. See wonderful photos here.
